Bangkok 2011
Date: 23/7/2011 - 26/7/2011
Airline: Tiger Airways
Hotel: Amari Watergate
After work on Friday, a simple dinner with SZ before heading back to my place to pack my clothings first.
I stay over at SZ's place as our flight to Bangkok is at 6.40am and his place is just 10 mins drive away from the airport.
And as expected, we couldn't sleep because we were pretty excited for this trip :)
I was drifting in and out of my sleep and decided to be up at 4am to take my time to bath.
Upon arrival to the budget terminal, there was already a huge crowd at the check in counters, lucky we arrived early else we'll have to skip our Mcdonald's breakfast.
Our flight went off on time, and I tried catching some sleep but ended up drifting in and out again.

We finally reached the airport at 8am Bangkok time and I can't wait to check in to the room!
I wanted to take the airport train to the city but the alighting station was a distance walk to the hotel :(
The airport staff told us it is only 45 baht per person; so cheap right?
The most convenient way to our hotel, the taxi.
It goes by meter, plus 50 baht/person airport surcharge, that makes 100 baht + our cab fare which SZ paid about 400 baht altogether?
I think so.
We reached the hotel lobby at 9.30am Bangkok time, we couldn't check in as we were too early and there is an option to check in early with additional charges, I think it was 800 baht, but the PR lady did not offer to us this service, she simply told us we were too early, come back later.
I was counting the hours to check in and if 800 baht was worth the extra hours, why not?
So I told SZ why don't we asked if we can get any available room right now, else we'll pay for the service. So at the check in counter, another lady kindly helped us locate a room and yes we were lucky!
We got a free upgrade to grand deluxe, we didn't get a king size bed as requested but we got a double super single size beds join together, as long as I can sleep on it, it doesn't matter! Plus we didn't have to fork out a single cent for the early check in :)
We were up in our room at 9.45am Bangkok time, our earliest hotel check in ever!

We finally had our much needed sleep and slept till 12.30pm.
Off for lunch and our first stop is The Platinum Mall which is located directly opposite our hotel.
The food court is located at level 6.

You've got to try the Mama Noodles; first row, right side image.
Shopping time!
I believe this is the only mall with an explosive range of clothings, shoes, bags and accessories.
They now have a new extension building for shoes and bags, it's three levels dedicated to just more shoes and bags! Hahaha :)

After a few hours of shopping, we went back to our room to unload my loots and took a short nap. We woke up for dinner and it was raining heavily outside!
I brought along my umbrella because I know it's raining season for Thailand.

We walked to Central World, which is 10 minutes walk from our hotel.
We had Coca Steamboat for dinner and we over-ordered our food!

The best prawns :)
Right after dinner we went up to the supermarket to stock up on bottled drinks.

There's Naraya at Central World and this season's designs wasn't fantastic, I left the shop with only one bag :(
There's nothing much to shop at Central World and it's a pretty quiet for a Saturday night; maybe because it rained.
But you can stop by here for food, go to Boots to get some cheap toiletries.
There's Isetan and Kinokuniya where you can find a wide variety of those Japanese magazines with free goodies/bags inside, definitely more than Singapore however priced almost the same.
The burnt down section is not ready yet.
The Sylvanian Families concept restaurant has closed down :( I was looking forward to getting another toy home!

We stopped by BR for ice cream at Platinum Mall.

It started raining again when SZ and I were enjoying our ice cream.
We headed back straight to our hotel and since it was still raining, we decided to stay in our room.
I was ready for bed at 11.45pm Bangkok time and fell sleep almost immediately plus the aircon was at 'amanda's best' temperature while SZ complained hot; he couldn't find the switch for the aircon and was wondering were it was located.
So with this temperature I could sleep without my jacket for once, hahaha!
Sleeping in the same room with SZ is like sleeping with a polar bear; he likes to freeze me.
I discovered the aircon box the next day and happily pointed out to SZ, that's where he freeze me and I caught the sudden coldness hence I'm in my cardigan most of the time in my photos!
Since we slept so early the night before we woke up for breakfast!

It's Chatuchak Market day!

Very important, you'll need your sun screen protection :)

At Gaysorn; one-stop luxury shopping center.
The nearest train station is about 20 minutes walk from our hotel; Chit Lom station.
It's 35 baht/person to Mo Chit station.
Everyone heading to the market will exit at this station so no worries about getting lost because you can just follow the crowd!

At the market!

Cool juicer :)

Animal Zone:

We were trying to figure out what this animal is!

There are plenty of food at the market!

Pick and mix oily food!

Cold stale food :(
We took a bite and left the bowl untouched.

This is the best coconut ice cream ever!
Yes, I was searching high and low for this, now you ask me where is the stall I have no idea also, just walk and you'll be able to find, located along the main pavement.

Sunny shades for 199 baht!

Don't bother going back by train because you'll be dead tired by then and there will be a huge crowd at the train station going back to the city.

Back to the room to change a new top I bought from Platinum Mall and my shorts!
We just flagged a cab by the road side and remember to ask the uncle to go by meter, if he doesn't, then say thanks and flag for another one.
Home sweet room; we took a short rest before heading out for dinner.
We took a Tuk Tuk to Siam area.
The thing about Tuk Tuk is, there is no market price to determine if you have been over charged / cheated by the uncle.
Bottom line, if you think the uncle quote you too high just say thanks and walk away.
If you are willing to pay the price the uncle has quoted you, just hop on and don't think you have been over charged because once you start thinking about it, you will have this feeling you have been over charged!
We paid 100 baht to Siam, which is technically an over charged price if you go via taxi meter but it was peak hour and the uncle could maneuver fast enough to get us to the restaurant, so 100 baht was ok to me but SZ thinks likewise because he insist we have been over charged! Hahaha!
Some people can be super anal about Tuk Tuk, warning others never to take them but it is really all up to you on how willing are you to pay them, they won't force you to take if you say no, well that's my experience, I don't know if others have been forced.

Dinner at

It's 3 minutes walk from Novotel Hotel, Siam Sqaure.
Two years ago we came here with my sister and brother-in-law after being introduced by my university friend, it was really good two years ago but now the standard has dropped, it was still acceptable but we could probably get better thai food elsewhere!

The Thai iced tea is good :)

The steamed fish was still good to me but SZ thinks it falls flat.
Just opposite the restaruant is a dessert shop called Mango Tango.
We decided to head over to have their Mango Sticky Rice :)

There are shops here in Siam Square, things here can be slightly expensive but you can find unique items.
We walked over to Siam Paragon.
This is a branded shopping mall with all the brands you know.
They even sell cars in the mall.

My dream car!

There's a link way right up to Siam Center.
There is pretty nothing much there to buy, we left almost immediately.
We looked out at the roads and the horror jam made us decide to take the train back.
It's just one stop from Siam to Chit Lom and we almost lost our way when we reached Chit Lom because SZ rarely takes the train in Singapore so he doesn't knows train station has more than one exit, so he blindly takes an exit and I blindly follow him.
Back to our hotel to unload my loots!
We ended the night with a Thai foot massage which is located along a row of shophouses at the Baiyoke Sky Hotel which is located behind Amari Watergate, about 5 minutes walk if you know the shortcut (which is actually part of the Pratunam Market but the shops closes by 6pm so it can get really dark at night), 10 minutes walk if you walk by the pavement along the main road.
Some parts of Pratunam Market is open till late, those stalls nearer to Baiyoke Sky Hotel.
The massage shop is probably owned by a Chinese Thai because it has CNY decorations on the wall.
We had Mcdonald's for supper, located at Platinum Mall, 24 hours.
They have the two piece chicken meal, the taste was bad :(
But nothing beats Malaysia's Mcdonald's Ayam Goreng!
We skipped breakfast for more sleep the next morning.
Up and ready for more shopping at MBK Center.
Lunch at a cafe that serves thai food, didn't notice the shop name.
The food was ok but the green curry fail; we totally left the bowl untouched.

We were just trying to be cute!

Super sour lime juice.

Tops Supermarket at MBK.
You can purchase back to Singapore those thai snacks / food items from MBK.
As you go up the levels you will find one level selling new / old handphone, handphone covers (it's a iphone/ipad cover paradise up here!), ipads, iphone jail-breaking services with apps that you can choose from their computer and they instantly download for you.
You must ask a few shops for the any iphone covers you are looking for before going for the cheapest quote you received.
I gotten the Cath Kidston iphone covers for 200 baht each, that is $8.00.
There are places that quoted us 500/600 baht claiming it's original COPY from UK, oh please, hahaha!
Singapore is selling for $15.00 at those rental boxes shop in Vivo City, so we won't pay anything more than $15.00.

A happy boy with this metal lamp shade from the car accessories shop.

We headed to Swensens for ice cream, they have more variety here plus it's cheaper. I noticed Swensens here don't serve food. At first I thought they had lunch / dinner menu served at different timings then I realized the one at Platinum Mall doesn't seems to serve food as well when were we passing by at night.
So I guess it's just purely ice cream!

We took a cab back to our hotel, unload my loots, went to Platinum Mall for a while but it was almost towards closing time, they close at 7pm but by 6pm some shops were already packing up. And that's where I discovered there are more things to shop at the new building!

Really good street side food at Pratunam Market, ready cooked placed on a big hot plate to keep it hot! (It's the same thing we ordered at JJ market just that this taste better when it's pipping hot!) It really looks like carrot cake but it's not, we have no idea and the spicy chill sauce was double shiok!
We headed to Central World for dinner. I was hungry and just wanted to sit down so we settled for a Japanese restaurant which we kinda regretted eating there because the food was "we-know-we-could-get-better-elsewhere". :/
And I didn't took a photo of the shop name, it's opposite this Italian restaurant, I remember it had blue background on the logo with white words. So yeah, don't go.
We went back to our Thai massage, did a foot, head, neck, shoulder massage. The auntie who massaged by foot the night before was not free to attend to me so I've got a young girl instead and oh my, she used so much strength, I felt my head and neck breaking apart!
I told her not too hard st the start of my food massage but all I felt was every press seems harder and stronger than before which resulted with blue black feeling on my head the next day :(
We decided to take the shortcut back to our hotel which was pretty scary because it was dark, dimly lights at some corner. But there were security guards when we were walking towards the main road!
Supper at the hotel's pub at the basement lobby.
Since we had 20% discount on food items might as well we use it!

One for one happy hour drinks!

Cath Kidston :)
Last day...
As usual we didn't wake up for breakfast!
I wanted to swim but was pretty lazy.
We still went up to check out the pool.

Green Kuay?
We headed to Grand Diamond Hotel's food court for lunch, the food court is small and pretty quiet, a far cry to Platinum Mall's food court.
Off to Platinum Mall for last minute shopping!

More bags for you?!

My Cath Kidston luggage bag, I saw three Singaporean girls each pulling the luggage and I totally wanted to have one! We asked them for directions to the shop, it's hidden at one corner!
